Biographical Information

Robert J. Zak, CPA/ABV, is a Certified Public Accountant who is Accredited in Business Valuation by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.  Bob is recognized by the Courts, attorneys, business owners and his peers as an accomplished business valuation analyst with integrity. 

Courts  

Bob has been appointed by the Courts in Essex and Passaic counties and has testified in Bergen, Passaic and Monmouth counties. 

Lecturer

Bob has lectured at the 2006 Business Law Symposium, sponsored by the Institute of Continuing Legal Education, and to professionals and colleagues on various business valuation topics, including: Using Ibbotson’s data in determining a discount rate; defending a capitalization rate; applying valuation discounts and premiums; and the applicability of USPAP in preparing reports.

 Representative Engagements

The firm of Robert J. Zak, CPA/ABV has:

·     Worked on a transaction involving the purchase of the majority shareholder’s interest by key employees for approximately $10 million.  The company was generating approximately $30 million in yearly revenues.  Bob prepared a valuation report for the company, worked with the attorney and key employees in negotiating a deal and prepared various cash-flow projections and “what-if” scenarios.  

·     Provided extensive research related to the use of IPO and Restricted Stock Studies for use in the determination of discounts for lack of marketability.  This case involved the Chairman of the Board of a publicly traded telecommunications company in a high-profile matrimonial dispute.

·     Assisted in the preparation of an extensive valuation rebuttal report relating to approximately $125 million of future legal fees to be received by a spouse in a Texas matrimonial dissolution matter. 

·      Prepared various economic damages reports

·      Assisted in successful settlement conferences

·      Determined income for changes in support

·      Talked to his son’s kindergarten class on what a CPA does 

 Professional Affiliations

Bob is a member of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants where he serves as a committee member on the Litigation Support Services Committee and the Business Valuation Subcommittee.  He has co-chaired the Business Valuation Subcommittee in 1998-99.   Bob is also a member of the Institute of Business Appraisers and is a candidate of the American Society of Appraisers.  He was Treasurer of the Northern New Jersey Chapter for the fiscal years ended June 30, 2003 and 2004.

Accounting Background

Bob has been practicing in public accounting since 1985.  He has provided traditional accounting, auditing, tax and consulting services to a variety of businesses in a wide range of industries, including, but not limited to, manufacturing, importing, wholesaling, retailing, professional services, food services, restaurants, real estate, insurance, distribution and construction.  Bob also has significant experience in the areas of estate administration and accounting for guardianships and trusts. 

Education

Bob graduated from Seton Hall University in May 1986 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting.  He has more than 100 hours in formal business valuation training from the American Society of Appraisers and has attended numerous conferences and seminars.

Personal

Bob, 44, has been married to Stephanie for 12 years and has a 7-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter.  Bob enjoys playing competitive pool.  He was sanctioned as a semi-professional back in the middle 1990s and beat the No. 1 player in the world.  He also enjoys skiing, playing golf and practicing Tai Chi.
